I channeled my inner Zelda Fitzgerald and danced a little Charleston for my latest shop update! I think that you can't help but have a good time when you're dancing the Charleston! It's so fun!

The vintage bolero from the first photo is here and the crochet flapper dress can be found here. This dress is just waiting for a good party!

merry merry

Merry Christmas everyone!
We're going to spend Christmas with Shane's family in the Okanagan this year, so I won't be around for a while (not like that's anything new). I'll be back before the new year, hopefully with some entertaining stories and photos to share.

I hope everyone has the best holiday season ever! Remember to indulge in too many cakes and cookies... because that's what the holidays are for!

the weather outside is frightful

We're experiencing a bit of a cold snap out here on the west coast. It's snowed for days and has been actually cold enough for it to last! Today was the coldest of the last few days and our heating system was struggling to say the least. Vancouver is in Canada, but it doesn't actually ever get the classic Canadian winters. This is one of the reasons why I moved here. I freaking hate winter. The cold is too much for my bony frame to withstand! I dressed in layers today. If you want to know the extent of layers you can click here.

I wasn't brave enough to venture outside, so I stayed in and decorated a bit more for Christmas. I fixed the tree problems and made some Christmas pillows! I know, I know, I am one step away from breaking out the Christmas sweaters! But that will have to wait for another post...

I didn't mean to buy so many extra ornaments for the tree. I bought the lights which I needed, and then they had this glass bead garland on sale that I just couldn't say no to (but didn't even use in the end) and then I found these amazing almost florescent pink glass ornaments and the opaque blue ones at the thrift store, so I couldn't just leave them there either... I'm going to have a bit of a storage issue come January, but just look at this glorious tree! It's perfect!

I also added a few ornaments to my totally fake and totally Christmassy red pine garland!

Finally, I made four new pillows! Two are made from the velvet I used to upholster my chairs backed with a mint green cashmere wool, and the other two are pillow panels from the archives. I bought these when I worked at the fabric store, so they are at least twelve years old! Crazy! I still remember that they were from a collection called "vienna" because they are loosely based on Gustav Klimt design elements.

modcloth mod life

The girls over at ModCloth have chosen me as their style inspiration today! They liked my outfit that I based on this Ashley Goldberg print! Thanks girls! And thanks Ashley for being my style inspiration for that day!

oh christmas tree...

I threw elf into the dvd player on Saturday afternoon and set up my tree! I subscribe to the maximalist way of life... especially when it comes to the tackiness of Christmas!!! The more the merrier, I think. I even tie each ornament on with ribbon bows to add to the abundance! There's a couple of bare spots on the tree that are driving me bonkers! I'm going to have to buy more ornaments!!!

So anyway. I didn't think to test the lights before I put them on the tree until I received an email from my sister last night saying that she couldn't decorate her tree until she got some replacement lightbulbs... uh oh. I couldn't even plug my tree in until last night because I misplaced my extension cord somewhere. So I bought one on my lunch break yesterday and hoped for the best. The lights worked... BUT (and I have this problem every year. I should really leave myself a note attached to the lights.) I have two strands of lights on the tree and one of them doesn't reach all the way to the top if I start on the bottom row of branches. I never hang anything on that row, so why do I put lights there? I dunno. So the top of the tree is a little dark.

Anabela did a post about her Christmas tree the other day and how she felt like she was the Cobrasnake taking party photos of her tree. Her tree didn't get topless... but mine did! I'm going to try and find a little mini strand of lights today to top it off.

these are the rules

1. Link to the person who tagged you.
2. Post the rules on your blog.
3. Write six random things about yourself.
4. Tag six people at the end of your post and link to them.
5. Let each person know they have been tagged and leave a comment on their blog.
6. Let the tagger know when your entry is up.

That seems like an awful amount of tyranny for this time of year... but I do like me a survey. I was tagged by the amazing Anja so, I didn't want to let her down!

1. I am a notorious hermit, yet every time I go out I know just about everyone and I spend the night "working the room". It's a weird phenomenon. I am an enigma.

2. When I was a child, my number one goal in life was to one day work for Jim Henson. I wanted to make muppets because they were the most most magical and hilarious creatures I had ever laid eyes on. Jim Henson died when I was 15 years old and I basically went into mourning. My childhood dreams died that day and I still haven't fully recovered.

3. I've never owned a pet in my entire life! Shocking! I know.

4. I find muscles really unattractive. I hate working near the beach in the summer because of all the dudes who feel the need to wander around shirtless. It's disgusting.

5. I don't know how to drive and never really ever wanted to learn, but I've always been into classic cars. I even tried to convince my dad to buy me this sweet 1957 black Ford Thunderbird that I had found in some junkyard. I almost had him convinced too (he used to own one and he's always regretting getting rid of all of his old cars, so I had nostalgia on my side) but then he remembered that I was a sixteen year old kid without a driver's license... so it never happened.

6. I am a Maggie Gyllenhaal look-alike only I'm much shorter. Quite blatantly so... I could never use my... er, I mean... her celebrity to gain free swag. Bummer.

I'm tagging:
Teagan because I know how much she loves a good survey!
Megan because she's got a brand new blog and she's awesome!
Carmen because she's a tour de force of awesome!
America because she never blogs anymore and that is a shame!
Daphne because I just discovered her blog and I can't get enough of her!
Sunshine because she's really inspirational!

dress you up in my love

I've added a few new items to the shop!

The first is a lovely little cocktail hat made from a high quality virgin wool flannel with a vintage doily and a whole lot of hand stitching! When I think of doilies, I think of two things: tea parties and Anabela! So I called this hat tea for two! I'd love to actually have a tea party with Anabela, but we live far away from eachother, so it will remain a dream for now. Incidentally, Anabela has the most amazing made to order cape in her etsy shop that would go smashingly well with this little hat! Everything this girl makes and her boy draws are so perfectly delicate! Their shop makes me swoon!

The second item is the black forest capelet! I was going to go full out victorian goth with this one, but I realized that it was so much more than that! It's kind of gothic fairytale styling to the hilt! The cotton trim and Victorian reproduction floral print cotton lining with just a splash of red just puts it over the edge! I actually feel like a walking Amy Earles illustration in it!

In case you're wondering:
both dresses were made by me
the Battenburg lace collar cameo and shoes from the "tea for two" were all thrifted
the fur hat was thrifted
the boots are fluevog samples

comfy cozy

I woke up this morning, got dressed and started wrapping up a few things for the mail, and then it hit me... the sun is actually shining!!! I thought that I could either just go outside and enjoy a chilly walk, or I could get some work done and do a photo shoot for some things that have been waiting to be listed in the shop for a little while now. I chose to get some work done... and go for a walk later! This was one of three outfits that I wore today! And I never did go for that walk.

it's beginning to look a lot like christmas

I did a pretty big shop update this afternoon! Most of the new earrings are slightly hinting at Christmas, only subtly though. I'm not making any of those Santa and Rudolph things, just hints of whimsy and red and green. But not red and green together, so you can get away with wearing them all the time!

what the dickens?

I've started my Christmas decorating! I just put up a few giant snowflakes in the bathroom... they just look amazing next to the Emma Jeffs window film! I feel like it's really snowy outside when I'm in here! I just don't ever really feel Christmassy over here on the west coast where all we get is rain (save for a few days in January). I grew up in North Western Ontario where it snows from the beginning of November until, like, April? I remember snow in June one year... ugh! So I always feel like Christmas kind of sneaks up on me because I don't have the snow. I compensate by adding as much gaudy glitter and lights as I can to my decor! And baking cookies... too many cookies! I'm thinking that maybe tomorrow, or for sure by the end of the week I will have my tree up and hopefully one batch of cookies made!

I wore a little Dickens inspired outfit for hanging snowflakes and wardrobe remix. I went out to mail a few packages and get scared by the shopping hordes soon after and even had some lovely fingerless gloves to complete the look!
