Shop update! I'm leaving on Monday for 3 weeks of NO INTERNET! Aaaaaaaaahhhckk! I don't know what I will do with myself! So if you want to shop the shop do so before Sunday or wait until I get back. Its up to you.

Making A List, Checking It Twice

No not Santa silly. I've never been tagged for one of these listy bloggy things before, but if you're my friend on myspace, you know that I LOVE to do the surveys!!! Getting to know you. Getting to know all about you... So without further adieu, I pulled this from Ashley's blog and here are seven interesting (or not so interesting depending on subjectivity) facts about me:

1. I quit my job this week because of astrology. I worked there for 6 years.

2. I'm slightly psychic and can always tell when someone has emailed me, and log on immediately to see who it was. Psychic powers run in my family on my Dad's side.

3. I hardly own any neutral coloured clothing, thus making it very difficult to get dressed without looking like a circus clown.

4. I have pointy elf ears, but nobody ever said anything about it, so I didn't know, until 3 years ago.

5. I watched Rainman last year for the first time and realised that all of Dustin Hoffman's catch phrases are also my own. I must be autisitc. Yeah. Pretty good.

6. When I met Shane four years ago I instantly fell in love. He was glowing.

7. I love taxidermy, fur (only vintage because I feel it's giving a poor dead animal a new home and a new life), and leather; but was a vegetarian for 13 years and am now only a part-time-meat-eater (it still grosses me out sometimes).

I want to know more about YOU! I'm tagging Bunny and Ambika but not Susan because I know she won't do it... but maybe she will... okay. I'll tag her too! And if you want to, leave your list in the comments, because I LOVE lists! Even if they're not my own.

Happy Birthday Baby A

So around this time of year everyone is like: Baby Jesus this, baby Jesus that; but what about that other baby that was born back in 1978 on this very day? Now there's a babe worth talking about! Happy Birthday sis! I hope you eat lots of cake! AND I hope you get away for Christmas! LOVE YOU!

Ho Hum

My BFF Shane left for the weekend to serenade the masses over in Victoria with his band The Choir Practice. They're playing the Mint Records' Christmas party tonight! I've been left with a bit of quiet time, so I made some earrings. You can find them in my shop.

Peep This

What's my mutha f***in' name?

I am a lunatic! I'm crazy for these Botswana agate beads! They look like tiny little moons! I presently have three variations of earrings in my shop featuring these beauties. I'm also working on a new hat that will coordinate with these gorgeous beads and hope to have it up by next weekend.

Also, I am a lunatic shopper and bought the previously posted boots. They were on sale. Justified my love.

Break It Down

Kris's Color Stripes is the visual representation of a colour addict's brain. She takes a photograph and then creates a colour palate based on what she sees. I think that all artists do this mentally, but her blog is the physical representation of what happens in our minds! I can't get enough of these colour combos!

The Most Perfect Bench Ever!

Isn't this the most amazing thing you have ever seen?! I love the ribbons of colour that are created by sanding down the layers of wood and tinted glue. It was made by designer Rosie Hanna.

I always cut into the dried paint on my stir sticks in the studio to see the history of my painting habits. One day I will do something on a grander scale with these cross sections, but they will never be as perfect as that bench!

The Mad Hatter

Why is it that I always look like a psychopath when I take my own photo?
Oh yeah, it's because I AM a psychopath!

I made a hat. You can find it in my shop.

Megan Bogonovitch

I was familiar with Megan's Etsy shop, melabo but I hadn't gone over to her website until just recently. I wish I had gone sooner! Her ceramics are the type of thing that I wanted to make when I was in university (way back when) but my pot-smoking professor had an aversion to coloured glazes and forbad anyone from using them, or any pop culture references in their work, for that matter. She found it trite. I therefore, made organic goth sculptures out of red clay rubbed with iron oxide and I skipped class almost every day. I still passed with honours, but I regret to this day that I didn't follow my heart and use that colour glaze and that old DAS mould set.

These are some examples from Megan's website. I had a really hard time narrowing my selections down to a few! I love all of her work so much! Her sculptures are kind of like a three dimensional illustration, and the colours are so soft and watercoloury. Almost confectionary in their appearance!

Her work immediately reminds me of Jeff Koons' work; most probably because of the ceramic aspect and the pop culture references. Jeff's work was 80s pop culture; sex, booze, Nike, and cynicism. Megan's work is pop culture of the oughts where its a softer, more feminine folklore with a touch of cynicism added for good measure.

Entoptic Phenomena

Wiliam Hundley is a photographer based out of Austin, Texas. His flickr photostream is so addicting! He has endless photos of fabric blobs seemingly floating in mid air! Its magic! Well, actually its not. He gets people to jump while concealing their bodies with various fabrics. The end result still reads as magic to me!

Buy My Stuff

I need cash. Real bad. I just booked my flight home for the hollidays and yikes... my family had better be nice to me! I could have gone somewhere far more exotic than North-western Ontario for the cost of my ticket. I love my family, and haven't been "home" to visit for over 5 years now, so I know it will be a great time. Eating, thrift store shopping, eating, being cold, eating, hmmm... probably watching TV with Mum and Dad... eating. I will be bored for 3 weeks, and when I return I will be poor. AND I have fallen in love with two pairs of boots. What's a girl to do? Ask Santa?

These are from Free People and cost about half of what my ticket home cost. *whoops! UPDATE* These boots are soooo fugly in person. They look like Wallmart. I did't notice in the photo, but they have a HUGE moulded rubber sole with eeeew fake stitching! Come on man! If your boots cost over 400bucks I think you can figure out a way to make actual thread stitching.

And these are slightly more affordable (although I can't) from Brown's B2 line. They look like grubs! Gross, yet (m)odly apealing.

I love them both! Help a sister out!

She's Like A Rainbow

I am not sponsored by Bravia. No.
I think that these adverts are less about the product and more about the art, the concept, the colour, and making people feel really, really happy.

Another THANK YOU! to Ulixis who included my dream sequence earrings in her goldenrod Etsy treasury! It's my first inclusion in one of these treasuries and I was so excited to hear the news (although I missed the thrill of seing it on the front page first hand). Two in one day! Thanks so much girls!

Innernet Friends (Or How I Love HTML)

A big THANK YOU! to Ambika of (into) The Fray for featuring my drawings over at her blog today! I'm so grateful for the exposure Ambika! It's hard to get noticed in the sea of Etsy sellers.

Fluffy's Gonna Save Us A Bundle

I clearly do not have TV. Whilst looking for larger versions of the cat painting documentary videos I came across this advert. Its too cute and funny!
I want a painting kitty!!!

Uh Oh...

I am becoming a crazy cat lady... but I don't have any cats. I'm allergic, but I like them. A lot. Perhaps too much.

So... anyhoo, I was parusing the shops over at Etsy and I came across a listing for a book called "Why Cats Paint- a theory of feline aesthetics" at CME scout's shop. I marked it as a favourite, because I thought that it was really funny. But then I kept going back to that listing. There was more to it than just being funny. I had become obsessed with this ridiculous cat book! I had to own it! I ordered it.

You can get your own edition of Why Cats Paint here! Or if you don't need to own it (but I doubt that), you can just visit this website! Check out the documentary section because it is soooooooooooo cute!

I can't wait for my book to arrive!
I only wish that it came with a dvd. I could watch cats paint all day!!!!

AM Gold

I've added just a few more things to the shop. And I've tidied up a bit of the clutter over there as well. I think it looks better now. What do you think?

Evan Harris

This morning, Grace at design*sponge posted about the wall murals at the Ace Hotel in Portland, Oregon done by Evan Harris. I had to see more of his work! I love it when dudes make art that is soft neopolitan ice cream colours that feature swirly vines, flowers and forest creatures! Especially if they're covered in tattoos. I know it's a stereotype, but I love the juxtaposition.
I am absolutely in L.O.V.E. with his work.

Art Imitates Life

A few small size original drawings have also been added to the shop. I think I need a few pointers on photographing artwork. These turned out kind of lacklustre. Does anybody have any hints? Am I going to have to build a light box?

The Golden Age

More new earrings inspired by vintage amber glass lamps in the shop right now!

Don't Go Into The Woods Today

Karin just sent me one of the photos from last weeks shoot!

Karin Bubas

Last week I had the absolute pleasure of playing dress up and posing for photos for the lovely and talented Karin Bubas! (this is not me in the photo above) I love the photo of the mop and broom so very much! It's just so romantic! Love can be found anywhere; even in the utility closet. Seven minutes of heaven, anyone?

Karin has only recently made her foray into the world of the full time artist, and she highly recommends quitting your day-job to focus on your career. Albeit with a little bit of planning. Oh, and a whole lot of talent!

Thus is the plight of the artist: it's a dificult concept to imagine living off the fruits of your imagination without that safety net of a steady paycheque from some job that is probably sucking your soul anyway... so why is it so hard to give it up? Sometimes after leaving the work-job and complaining for about 1-2 hours I feel that there is nothing left to give. But I get paid, so... something has to suffer... right? Wrong. Cutting back on the "retail therapy" is the first step to starting your new, happy, and fulfilling life as a self-employed artist. It sounds easy... but it's NOT! It's that vicious cycle of being unsatisfied with life and filling the void with fancy coffee, trinkets and shoes. Do you have any idea how many pairs of shoes I have bought in the last two weeks? NINE. It was a rough couple of weeks, okay. Don't judge.

Talking with Karin was very inspirational. She said I was a natural! So with that encouragement I have decided to quit my day job to focus on modelling, full time! I already have a photo shoot scheduled for next week. Things are looking up!
... now, if only this were a viable career option for me.

We got the mouse lastnight. About an hour after we went to bed we heard the trap snap.
I had the worst feeling in my stomach. I was the executor. I set the trap. I killed my cute little disease infested mouse friend.
Why didn't he let me catch him in that yogurt container? whhhhhhhyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!

Shop Update!

Whoa! Can you believe it? I'm actually updating the shop! Two new pairs of darling snowflake earrings are listed as of now! Check 'em out!

Thursday, October 4, 2007

Yesss Rocktober! I'm in the poster art segment of ION magazine this month. I had a feeling that I was going to come across as an asshole in the "interview". I use quotations because those used in the "interview" are not direct quotes! I'm way funnier than that, and I think you all know it.

That said; I also never liked horses. I never understood those girls. I never had those tell tale Freudian dreams of galloping stallions. And I still have dreams of being a housewife... well, crazy-shut-in-hermit-lady. They're pretty much the same thing right?

Dreams can come true!
